You may have heard that “You’ll never leave Harlan alive” but there are some chilling stories that suggest that some of Harlan County’s residents never left even after they died. Here are a few Harlan County ghost stories to keep you up at night…

Red Dog Road

The Legend: In the 1930s, the coal miners lived along Red Dog Road and walked back and forth to work. For generations, locals have told the tale of a miner who suspected his wife of being unfaithful. In a jealous rage, he murdered a fellow coal miner that he accused of being with his wife. It was the wrong man and now the restless spirit of the wrongfully murdered man wanders the mountainside looking for his killer. Witnesses report seeing a light moving through the forest as though it were the mining light on a coal miner’s hard hat.

The Reality: While the legend of the coal miner can’t be proven, Red Dog Road become central to a real life mystery in 1969. A young woman was found murdered in the mountains of Harlan County. No one could identify her and she was buried in a cemetery high on Red Dog Road where she remained under a marker reading “Unidentified” for almost 50 years. In 2016, her body was exhumed and DNA identified her as Sonja Kaye Blair-Adams. While the mystery of her identity is solved, her killer has never been captured and her case remains open. You can read more here.

Headless Annie

The Legend: In the 1930s, coal mining was dangerous business. Not only were miners threatened by roof falls, bad air, and underground risks but they were also threatened with violence if they took steps to unionize. The companies went to extreme lengths to keep the union out of the mines and hired men to carry out gruesome attacks on miners who dared to defy them. One such miner who tried to organize a union met a fate worse than death when he was forced to watch his wife and young daughter, Annie, murdered in front of him before being killed himself. Travelers crossing Black Mountain have reported seeing Annie along the roadway. Sometimes she is headless. At other times, she is holding her head in her hands. Some have seen her standing alongside the road while others say she has chased their vehicles as they drove, sometimes even jumping onto their cars.

The Reality: The areas that set the scene for this story are now areas of significant tourism in Harlan County. Visitors can learn more about life in the coal camps and the struggle to unionize on a tour of the newly refurbished Portal 31 Underground Mine Exhibit. After the tour, take a drive to the top of Black Mountain along the Dragonslayer Hwy 160 where motorcycle enthusiasts are warned about the deep curves and black bear population but seldom warned of the presence of the ghost of a young girl.

The Harlan County Courthouse

The Legend: The Harlan County Courthouse was a convenient site for justice as prisoners were housed on the top floor and trials were held one floor below. Manzo Shepherd was one of those prisoners and his trial drew over 300 people who wanted to see him answer for his crimes. Manzo was accused of joining with two accomplices to murder a taxi driver at the top of Black Mountain. The case was a dramatic one but no one could predict that it would take a shocking turn when the victim’s nephew pulled out a pistol and shot Manzo in the courtroom. Manzo’s unremorseful spirit continues to haunt the courtroom where he was shot. Paranormal investigators regularly make contact with him where he communicates everything except an apology for his heinous crimes. In addition to his presence, the spirits of other inmates who spent time in the jail are said to remain at the site.

The Reality: The Harlan County Courthouse continues to function as a government building with monthly fiscal court meetings being held in the same courtroom where Manzo was shot. The paranormal investigators and historians with Bloody Harlan Tours lead ghost tours throughout downtown Harlan including the haunted courthouse. Their tours operate year round but are especially popular during the season leading up to Halloween. You can join them for a free tour on October 21st as part of the Downtown Harlan Vintage Fall Festival or on October 27 as part of the Harlan County Jeep Fest.

Sassy Trash

-In a historic downtown, every building has a purpose it previously served before becoming what we see today. 108 N. Main Street was once a hardware store with a funeral parlor located on the upper floors. Many believe that the funeral parlor’s clients may still be lingering in the store. The current owners report hearing footsteps and noises in areas where there are no people. They also report items being moved. The activity has been so notable that paranormal investigators have confirmed their reports and added even more information with the use of EVPs. The EVPs indicate multiple spirits in the building.

The Reality: Sassy Trash is a popular store selling vintage and handmade items. The owners converted the upper floors of the shop into an apartment. The results of the paranormal investigation are documented in a production called Bazaar Encounters. You can visit the shop Wednesday-Saturday with new arrivals hitting the shelves every week. When you go to the counter to make your purchases, avoid ringing the service bell. The spirits say they hate the sound.

The Ghost of Highway 38

The Legend: Travelers on Highway 38 between Harlan and Evarts have been reporting sightings of a ghostly woman in white for 80 years. According to locals, she is most likely to appear on a dark and rainy night in the Coxton area. She also typically favors men over women. While a glimpse of a specter on a dark highway would be enough to frighten anyone, the woman’s next move is truly terrifying. After being spotted on the road, she appears in the backseat of the vehicle with the startled driver. This isn’t just your run of the mill urban legend of a ghostly hitchhiker. Reputable community members, including law enforcement, have reported the woman. In addition, her sudden appearance has scared some so thoroughly that they quit their jobs to avoid making deliveries or driving buses along this route.

The Reality: Highway 38 connects Harlan to Evarts and each year thousands of tourists traveling to the Black Mountain Off Road Adventure Area are completely unaware that they are driving through a haunted stretch of road. In recent years, paranormal investigators have focused on a grisly ax murder that left a young newlywed bride dead at the hands of her groom. Is this is the intersection where true crime meets paranormal legend? Read more about the murder of Marguerite Craig here.

Our mountains are full of mystery. We hope this spooky season, you take time to explore the sites and the unseen!

Nothing beats autumn in Appalachia! We’ve made a list of 10 things you must do to make the most out of fall in Harlan County!

-Visit The Apple Tree– High near the summit of Kentucky’s tallest peak, the Creech family’s orchard produces beautiful produce. Their store along Hwy 119 in Cumberland sells apples as well as products made from the apples. Their cider a famous fall treat! Find all the produce you’ll need for fall baking and put a little Harlan County goodness into those apple crisps, apple stack cakes, and apple butter!

-Buy a Fall Shirt- You’ll need something festive to layer under your flannel! Pick up the classic Hollerween shirt from Hill & Holler or order something custom from Mountain Merch. You’ll be pumpkin patch perfect in your fall fashion!

-Enjoy a Fall Festival- There’s no shortage of celebration in Harlan County this fall. From long established traditions like The Kingdom Come Swappin’ Meetin’ and the Pine Mountain Settlement School Fair Day & Sorghum Stir Off to new favorites like PossumFest and the Downtown Harlan Vintage Fall Festival, you have lots of events to choose from. Check out the Ultimate Guide to Fall Events in Harlan County for more information and more festivals to choose from.

-Friendly Fall Competition- Several fall festivals offer opportunities for visitors to compete in a variety of categories. Join the hot dog eating contest at the Dog Days of Kentucky festival. Bake your way to victory at the Evarts Hometown Pumpkin Patch baking contest. Check out each festival for more information.

-Drive Pine Mountain- Pine Mountain really shows off in the fall. For a casual drive through lovely fall foliage, take Laden Trail. If you’re looking for something off the beaten path, Little Shepherd Trail follows the crest of Pine Mountain. Take your time and enjoy the fall colors!

-Take a Hike- Fall is the reward for surviving a long hot summer. The mild weather makes it the perfect time to hit the hiking trails. See an old growth forest glow in fall colors like it has for hundreds of years at Blanton Forest. Climb soaring rock formations for views from Kingdom Come State Park. The memories of your fall hikes will get you through the cold winter days ahead!

-Taste Fall- Some of your favorite restaurants will be revamping their menus to reflect seasonal flavor. Pick up a Jack-O-Frappe or a Harvest Sandwich at Moonbow Tipple Coffee & Sweets. For something stronger, sip a Cranberry Whisky Sour at the Harlan County Beer Company. Order up something hot on a cool morning from Lamp House Coffee. At Raven Rock Coffee, Tea, & Curiosities, you’ll find fresh baked fall flavors sold alongside a shop of curiosities including cryptid and ghostly gear! Fall foods abound across the county!

-Take Home the Hand Made- With festivals taking place almost every weekend in September and October, you’ll have so many opportunities to browse booths set up by local artisans. Don’t miss the Festival of the Mountain Masters where every item is handmade, handcrafted, or home baked. In addition to these weekend opportunities, you’ll always find local artisan work at places like Sassy Trash and Roper’s Market. Soon we’ll all be spending more time indoors but you can surround yourself with one of a kind items that will remind you of mild fall days when you explored local merchants and festival vendors!

-Do Something Spooky- Fall is also spooky season and Harlan County offers some scary ways to mark the days! Work up your courage to visit a haunted house at Butcher Holler Spook House or Fright Nights at Kingdom Come State Park. Is local lore more your style? Tour historic Lynch Kentucky with “spirits” at each stop telling their own haunting stories. If your schedule doesn’t work with these special events, try booking your own tour of paranormal and true crime in Downtown Harlan with Bloody Harlan Tours.

-Trick or Treat- Little goblins have multiple opportunities to collect Halloween candy. In addition to the door to door trick or treating on Halloween night, both Harlan and Cumberland host trick or treat events in their downtowns. You’ll also find churches, organizations, and others hosting trunk or treat events around the county!

Every season in Harlan County is beautiful in its own way and we hope you’ll do everything you can to live fall to the fullest this season!

If you haven’t visited Harlan County since last Labor Day, you’ll find new businesses and features that have come to our community in the past year! Here are a few you may want to check out…

-The Harlan County Beer Company- Enjoy Harlan County’s first (legal) brew across from the Harlan County Courthouse in downtown Harlan. In addition to their beer and bar options, you’ll also find a menu full of local favorites and rotating specials. Follow their social media for announcements about live music, trivia nights, outdoor art classes, and other special events.

-Sasquatchi Hibachi- While sasquatches may or may not be lurking in the wilderness of Harlan County, they’re alive and well at this sasquatch themed Japanese restaurant on Main Street in downtown Cumberland. Choose your protein, filler, and veggies for a personalized experience that is sure to be a crowd pleaser for everyone!

-Leonz House of Steak & Subs- Following their success in Pineville, Kentucky, Leonz decided to branch out with a second location in Evarts! This weekend spot is serving up everything from ribeye steaks to catfish dinners. Their location in the heart of Evarts, an ATV friendly city, means you can ride your off-road vehicle off of the Black Mountain Off-Road Adventure Area and straight to the doors of Leonz for a delicious meal before heading back to the mountains!

-Harlan Dog Park- Harlan is a favorite destination for humans and dogs alike! In fall of 2022, dogs had their day when Harlan opened a downtown Dog Park! With a reliable fence, dogs can run off leash and play. You’ll find the dog park on Walnut Street just off of North Main St at the Flood Wall in downtown Harlan!

-Locked in Appalachia- Summer of 2023 brought the opening of downtown Harlan’s escape room! Gather your team and head to Central St. You’ll be challenged by puzzles, clues, and the clock as you race to escape within an hour. With two rooms available, you can double your fun by taking on both rooms!

-The Harlan Mural- 2nd St in Downtown Harlan got a facelift with the addition of a mural on the west side of Kentucky Family Dentistry’s building. The mural depicts a mountain scene with Harlan Kentucky on proud display. It’s a great spot to grab a quick photo for your Instagram as you capture your visit to Harlan!

-Southern Ruckus- This new boutique on 2nd St in Downtown Harlan offers women’s clothing including plus sizes, bags, hats, accessories, and footwear! With fresh items hitting the shelves with each season, you can follow fashion year round in one of Harlan’s newest shops!

Named for the famous rock formation in nearby Kingdom Come State Park, the shop offers custom drinks as well as home cooking, cafe menu, and baked goods. This course often has tournaments, and also has one of the most beautiful views that the county has to offer. Cumberland, KY 40823, and for more information you can call them at (606) 589-2502.
